You must provide your employer with an online share code or original documents as evidence of your right to work in the UK as soon as possible.
If you are a British or Irish Citizen, we can accept the following documents as proof of right to work:
- A passport showing that the holder is a British citizen or a citizen of the UK and Colonies having the right of abode in the UK. Please note we cannot accept an expired passport.
- A passport or passport card (in either case, must be current) showing that the holder is an Irish citizen. Please note we cannot accept an expired passport.
Since the 1st July 2021, EEA citizens and their family members are required to have immigration status in the UK and can no longer use an EEA passport or national identity card as proof of right to work. Instead, most EEA citizens prove their right to work using the Home Office online service.
The Home Office online service allows you to generate a 9-character long share code which can be shared with your employer, which, when entered alongside your date of birth, will enable them to view details of your right to work. To generate a share code, please click on the link below:

How Biometric Residence Card (BRC), Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) and Frontier Worker Permit (FWP) holders evidence their right to work has changed. Since the 6th April 2022, BRC, BRP and FWP holders are required to evidence their right to work using the Home Office online service only. Employers can no longer accept physical cards as proof of right to work.

Please send this share code, your date of birth and proof of your student status, such as a copy of your enrolment letter to your employer.
For students who have limited permission to work during term-time, please also provide a copy of your academic term and vacation times covering the duration of your period of study in the UK for which you will be employed. For example, a copy of your academic timetable.
